  1. Jinbei (a.k.a. hippari) or maybe Samue. It could also be a mens Kimono also. It could also be a Hakama. I would need to see what exactly you are looking at, Jinbei is for summer though. Here is a better description: The traditional forms of japanese clothing or japanese clothes in general is called wafuku. Traditional japanese clothing can be broken down into the following clothing categories. Kimono - meaning clothing or things to wear is the basic japanese clothing Yukata - the summer kimono Nagajugan - undergarments Clothing Accessories - obi, shoes, socks, etc. Haori - short silk jackets Michiyuki - Overcoats Hakama - japanese pants Uchikake - most formal kimono Shiro-maku - wedding kimono I think My Grandfather had either a Kimono or Yukata, though it has been so long since I have seen him. I think it was a kimono because it was silk.
  2. Men wear a yukata too. (Not a bystander) conventions often wear a "happi". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Happi
  3. Japanese guys also wear male yukata watching that festival. some wear Fundoshi褌, loincloth, momohiki股引, underpants and happi法被 (and/or hanten半纏)for special purpose participating in ceremony. Jinbei is incommon for festival participation but common in daily life in Summer. Happi (and/or hanten)is worn by performer of festivals. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fundoshi http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Happi http://matsuri-d.com/shop/items.php?c1_s=26&c2_s=26_42 http://www.kyo-ya.net/hanten/hanten.html
